Air Filtration

Why Your Home Needs Indoor Air Purification

Ultraviolet purifiers have been used in a wide range of sterilization applications for almost 100 years, including water treatment, food processing and disinfection of hospital equipment.

How Does Indoor Air Purification Work?

Basics of purification

Outdoors, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation destroys and deactivates airborne biological and chemical contaminants. Just like the sun’s rays, our purification systems’ UV light brings the same natural process into your home. The UVC range of ultraviolet light (with wavelengths of 100 to 280 nanometers) has germicidal activity that deactivates viruses, bacteria and mold by attacking their DNA preventing them from replicating and eventually destroying them.

What does purification do for my home?

UV purification is considered a proven and reliable method for sterilizing indoor air and the surfaces of cooling coils. The result is cleaner, more comfortable air for your family and a cleaner cooling coil to help maintain your system’s original performance.

What types of purification units are available?

Clean Comfort has two types of UVC purifiers to treat different types of microbial contaminants in your home.

UA Series Air Purifiers work to deactivate airborne microbial contaminants like bacteria, viruses, mold and allergens, while also deodorizing the air inside your home.

UC Series Coil Purifiers work to deactivate mold that can grow in the dark, humid environment of your heating and cooling system’s cooling coil.

UA Series Air Purifiers use high intensity UVC lamps to deactivate microbes on contact as they travel through the ductwork at speeds up to 500 feet per minute. The purifier only operates when air is flowing in the central HVAC system, which extends the life of the purifier’s lamp compared to operating continuously.

Mold, however, can grow any time on the cooling coil of your system. UC Series Coil Purifiers use lower intensity UV lamps than our air purifiers and operate on a 24/7 basis to help deactivate mold growth around the clock.

Why your home needs ultraviolet air purification?

Clean Comfort™ brand air purifiers work to reduce the amount of airborne microbes in your home by helping to deactivate them with UVC light. UVC sterilization works by attacking the DNA of microbes, such as bacteria, viruses and mold, preventing them from replicating and eventually destroying them. Because UVC light has been used for decades to help deactivate microbes without emitting chemicals, it is considered a proven and reliable method for sterilizing indoor air.

How does a UA Series air purifier work?

The UVC light of the UA Series Air Purifiers irradiates microbial contaminants as they pass through the sterilizing chamber. The “Turbulator” acts to slow down and spin the air entering the chamber to increase exposure time with the light from the specially-designed J-shaped UV lamp. The reflective inner surface of the sterilizing chamber further increases the effective intensity of the UV light, resulting in a substantially higher deactivation rate of the microbes passing through the Clean Comfort brand UA4000DV and UA2000DV Air Purifiers compared to UV purifiers without these features, such as single lamp coil purifiers.

Why your home needs ultraviolet coil purification?

UV disinfection of the coil helps maintain your system’s original performance by inhibiting mold growth which could reduce heat transfer efficiency and air flow through the cooling coil. Left unchecked, mold growth on the coil could clog the tiny spaces between the coil’s heat transfer fins, reducing the efficiency of your heating and cooling system.  Mold growth could also lead to mold spores becoming airborne and being circulated throughout your home.

How does a UC Series coil purifier work?

The dark, cool and damp environment of a cooling coil offers ideal conditions for sustaining mold growth. To combat this, UC Coil Purifiers radiate UVC light, which is an effective method to keep coils clean without harsh chemicals. Clean Comfort brand Coil Purifiers sanitize the coil’s surface, helping to inhibit the growth of mold and other microbials which could deteriorate the system’s performance. These Coil Purifiers operate 24/7 even when your heating and cooling system is not operating.

The UC Series Coil Purifier is installed in the ductwork of your central heating and cooling system, and shines UV light on the evaporator coil and coil pan around the clock. The “Premium Plus” dual-lamp UC36 Coil Purifier not only has twice the sterilizing power of single-lamp UC18 models, it also has an aluminum parabolic reflector that focuses and intensifies the UV energy to the desired area, which helps to ensure a cooling coil with reduced microbial growth.
