Preventative Maintenance

How do I maintain my HVAC system?

Like any other piece of machinery, HVAC systems require periodic servicing to ensure proper performance and the unit’s longevity. There are routine maintenance tasks that practically any homeowner can perform, and there are more sophisticated, scheduled maintenance measures that most homeowners should leave to a licensed HVAC professional. We recommend having your system professionally serviced twice a year, ideally in the spring and fall before peak usage seasons.

Here are a couple of HVAC system-servicing tasks that you can do yourself:

Change or Clean Your Air Filters

Depending on the type of air filter you use for your air conditioner, furnace or heat pump, it is recommended to replace the filter every one to three months. If you have washable filters, you should clean them once a month.

Clear Around Your Outdoor Unit

Keep grass, weeds or other debris away from your outdoor air conditioning or heating unit. Two feet of open space around the unit is ideal.

A Preventative Maintenance Program by All-Temp’s service professionals will inspect your HVAC system including:

  1. Check system controls to verify proper start-up, operation and shutdown
  2. Inspect condensate drain for clog
  3. Lubricate moving parts, specifically fan motor
  4. Check electrical connections and test voltage to motor
  5. Perform thermostat-setting diagnostics
  6. Inspect and clean evaporator and condenser coils
  7. Conduct refrigerant level check and line set inspection
  8. Clean and inspect the blower and associated components
  9. Inspect furnace components, including gas connections and valves, and burner assembly and heat

Can I repair my HVAC system?

Modern HVAC systems can be confusing and it can be tough to know how to repair them should something go wrong.

But there are some very basic steps you can take prior to contacting All Temp. However, if you are unsure about performing any of these measures, please call us.

  1. Cycle the breakers for the HVAC system and ensure that they are in the ON position.
  2. Make sure your circuit breakers are in the ON position.
  3. Make sure your filters are clean.
  4. Open supply and return vents and make sure they are unobstructed.
  5. Check the settings on your thermostat.
  6. Make sure the system switch is on the appropriate COOL or HEAT setting.

Depending on the age of your system, some components may be under warranty. All Temp will make you aware of any warranties on your system or its components, and be authorized to make good on parts warranties, if applicable.

Your HVAC system is likely one of the most technologically complex pieces of machinery in or around your home, not to mention a considerable capital investment. You want a well-trained and qualified HVAC professional installing, servicing or repairing it. What’s more, there are fundamental safety concerns when working with heating and cooling systems that utilize electricity, natural gas and toxic refrigerants in their operation.
